She still sounds like Katharine Hepburn to me.  From the moment Captain Janeway sat in her chair on the bridge of Voyager on the very first episode and said those magic words, "Engage", I knew I was going to like her.  And that was after months of speculation, rumors and gossip,  A woman captain on Star Trek - what a dreadful thought!  All my fears were proven unfounded.  She was an excellent choice for the role.

I caught Kate Mulgrew's appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn a while ago.  And I have to admit, Kate looks like a lot more fun than Kathryn Janeway.  But then Kate is not running a starship.  A leader has to have dignity, be able to discipline the crew, yet still maintain an image of approachability.  Particularly when the crew of Voyager is so far from home.  The scriptwriters have done a brilliant job in portraying the first female captain and are to be commended for it.  It only leaves me wondering about what the next series of the Star Trek saga will be like.  Hopefully we won't be kept waiting too long.

Of course Kate Mulgrew won't only be thought of as Kathryn Janeway - at least I hope not.  She's done plenty more work before Voyager aired, and will certainly continue to do just that after the current, and last, season of Voyager ends.

She is appearing in the new Star Trek movie, entitled Star Trek: Nemesis, due to be released December 13th, 2002 with Patrick Stewart.
