I'm currently searching for a better picture of "Our Wolfie". When I find it, you'll be the first ones to know!
You hear about actors who take a role, but are paranoid that the role will never leave them. Wolfie Smith has been like that for Robert Lindsay. The series only ran for a few years, starting way back in 1977. But speak to any Londoner who watched tv around that era, and everyone has heard of Citizen Smith.
But besides this nemesis of a role, Robert Lindsay has become a household name for other characters as well (for which he is probably very thankful). On stage, there have been many Shakespeare roles, in 1991 he won a BAFTA for his role as Michael Murray in GBH, and of course there are the Horatio Hornblower dramas, which are shown in the USA on the A&E channel. Recently, he's completed a mini series entitled Hawk and last year, narrated a Jack the Ripper special.
In between all this, he found time to star in Me and My Girl on Broadway and in the West End of London. For this role he won not only an Olivier Award, but a Tony and the Fred Astaire Award. Not bad for someone who claims he can't sing or dance!
In an interview on BBC TV with Michael Parkinson, he tells of the night of the Tony Awards on Broadway. There he is, on the red carpet, paparazzi all around him, cameras flashing everywhere.... and from the back of the crowd a lone British voice cries out... "Freedom for Tooting!" For fans of Wolfie, you'll know exactly what I mean. For those who don't.... hmmm, time to do some research on those 70s British sit-coms!
